Lesson 06.Future Tense (Futur I & Futur II)

Lesson Goals

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Form the future tense in Serbian (Futur I and Futur II)
  • Understand when to use Futur I (normal future) vs. Futur II (future perfect)
  • Make affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences in the future tense

1. Futur I – Normal Future

Structure:

[Present tense of hteti] + [Infinitive of main verb]

Conjugation of hteti (“will”):

In Futur I, the short form is used and is placed before the main verb.

Examples:

  • Ja ću raditi sutra. — I will work tomorrow.
  • Oni će uÄŤiti veÄŤeras. — They will study tonight.

2. Negatives in Futur I

Add ne in front of hteti (short form often merges):

  • Neću raditi sutra. — I will not work tomorrow.
  • Neće uÄŤiti veÄŤeras. — They will not study tonight.

3. Futur II – Future Perfect

Structure:

[Present tense of biti] + [Past participle of main verb]

Use Futur II to express an action that will be completed before another future action or in certain conditional clauses.

Examples:

  • Kad budem završio posao, doći ću. — When I have finished the work, I will come.
  • Ako budemo uÄŤili, poloĹľićemo ispit. — If we have studied, we will pass the exam.

(Will you come tomorrow?)

Marko: Da, doći ću oko devet.

(Yes, I will come around nine.)

Ana: Kad budeš stigao, zvaću te.

(When you have arrived, I will call you.)
