Lesson 10.Nominative Case

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Understand the function of the Nominative case in Serbian
  • Recognize nominative endings for singular and plural nouns
  • Use nominative with personal pronouns and adjective–noun agreement
  • Make simple sentences with the nominative case

1. Function of the Nominative

The nominative case is the base form of a noun and is used mainly for:

  • The subject of the sentence (who/what is performing the action)
  • Predicate nouns after the verb biti (“to be”)

Questions: ko? (who?) / šta? (what?)

Examples:

  • Marko radi. — Marko works. (subject)
  • Ana je uÄŤiteljica. — Ana is a teacher. (predicate noun)

4. Adjective–Noun Agreement in Nominative

Adjectives must agree with nouns in gender and number.

Masculine singular:

  • dobar student — a good student (m)

Feminine singular:

  • dobra uÄŤiteljica — a good teacher (f)

Neuter singular:

  • dobro selo — a good village

Masculine plural:

  • dobri studenti — good students (m)

Feminine plural:

  • dobre uÄŤiteljice — good teachers (f)

Neuter plural:

  • dobra sela — good villages
