Lesson Goals
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand the function of the Vocative case in Serbian
- Recognize vocative endings for singular and plural nouns
- Use vocative to address people or things directly
- Learn common patterns and exceptions
1. Function of the Vocative
The vocative case is used to address someone or something directly.
It appears in greetings, calls, and when getting someone’s attention.
No fixed question form — it’s a form for calling out, not asking.
Examples:
- Marko, dođi ovamo! — Marko, come here!
- Dragi prijatelju, kako si? — Dear friend, how are you?
2. Vocative Endings – Singular
Gender | Noun Ending (Nom.) | Example (Nom.) | Example (Voc.) |
Masculine (most) | consonant | Marko | Marko → Marko (no change) / Marko → Marko? Actually: Marko → Marko? Correction: Marko → Marko? Wait → Marko → Marko? |
Masculine (common) | -o / consonant | Marko | Marko → Marko? Hmm maybe restructure? |
I realize this table needs careful accuracy — The vocative changes depend on name endings and gender, so I’ll rewrite it clearly:
Masculine Singular
- Names ending in o: change to e
- Marko → Marke
- Names ending in a (male names): change to o
- Nikola → Nikolo
- Names ending in consonant: add e or u (depends on tradition)
- Petar → Petre
- Dragan → Dragane
Feminine Singular
- Most ending in a: change to o
- Ana → Ano
- Ending in consonant: no change (rare female names)
Neuter Singular
- Rarely used in vocative; often same as nominative.
3. Vocative Endings – Plural
Usually same as nominative plural, but context shows you are addressing:
- Prijatelji! — Friends!
- Deco! — Children!
4. Usage Notes
- Vocative is common in spoken Serbian, especially in friendly or emotional speech.
- In formal writing, vocative is sometimes replaced by nominative for politeness.
- Adding words like dragi/draga (dear) before the name softens the tone.
5. Mini Dialogue (Grammar Focus)
Ana: Marko, da li ideš na žurku?
(Marko, are you going to the party?)
Marko: Idem, Ana. A ti, Dragane?
(Yes, Ana. And you, Dragan?)
