Lesson 02.Basic Sentence Structure: SVO, Negation, Questions, Emphasis, and Omitting the Subject

Lesson Goals

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Use the default SVO word order in Serbian
  • Form negative sentences
  • Ask yes–no and WH-questions
  • Use emphasis by changing word order
  • Omit the subject when it is clear from the verb form

1. Default Word Order: SVO

Serbian’s default sentence structure is:

SVO = Subject – Verb – Object

Examples:

  • Ja ÄŤitam knjigu. — I read a book.
  • Ti pišeš pismo. — You write a letter.
  • On pije vodu. — He drinks water.
For subject–verb agreement details, see Lesson 4: Present Tense.

For verb–object pairing and the accusative case, see Lesson 10: Accusative Case.

2. Negation

Negatives are formed by placing ne before the verb.

  • Ne ÄŤitam knjigu. — I am not reading a book.
  • On ne radi. — He does not work.

With biti (“to be”), ne joins the verb into one word:

  • Ja nisam student. — I am not a student.
  • Oni nisu ovde. — They are not here.
See Lesson 19: Negation for more rules and exceptions.

3. Yes–No Questions

Three main ways to form yes–no questions:

  1. Add da li at the start (neutral)
    • Da li ÄŤitaš knjigu? — Are you reading a book?
  2. Verb–subject inversion (formal/literary)
    • ÄŚitaš li knjigu?
  3. Keep SVO but change intonation (informal)
    • ÄŚitaš knjigu?
See Lesson 14: Questions for a full list of question forms.

4. WH-Questions

WH-words (question words) come first:

  • ko — who
  • šta — what
  • gde — where
  • kada — when
  • kako — how
  • zašto — why

Examples:

  • Ko ÄŤita knjigu? — Who is reading the book?
  • Ĺ ta piješ? — What are you drinking?
  • Gde stanuješ? — Where do you live?

5. Omitting the Subject

In Serbian, subject pronouns are often omitted because the verb ending makes the subject clear.

  • ÄŚitam knjigu. — I am reading a book. (“ja” is understood)
  • Pijemo kafu. — We drink coffee. (“mi” is understood)
  • Sam student. — I am a student. (“ja” is understood)

6. Emphasis by Word Order Change

Because Serbian uses case endings, word order can change for emphasis without changing meaning.

  1. Ja čitam knjigu. — I am reading a book. (neutral)
  2. Knjigu čitam ja. — It’s me who is reading the book. (emphasis on subject)
  3. Ja knjigu čitam. — I am the one reading the book. (slightly emphatic)

7. Mini Dialogue (Grammar Focus)

Ana: Da li piješ kafu?

(Do you drink coffee?)

Marko: Pijem kafu svako jutro.

(I drink coffee every morning.)

Ana: A šta piješ sada?

(And what are you drinking now?)

Marko: Sada pijem ÄŤaj.

(Now I am drinking tea.)
