Lesson Goals
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand the concept of verb aspect in Serbian
- Distinguish between imperfective and perfective verbs
- Know when to use each aspect in combination with tenses
- Recognize common verb pairs (aspect partners)
1. What is Aspect?
Unlike English, Serbian verbs have an extra feature called aspect:
- Imperfective (nesvršeni vid) → focuses on the process or repetition of an action
- Perfective (svršeni vid) → focuses on the completion or result of an action
This difference is essential, because aspect determines how tenses are used.
2. Imperfective Verbs
- Emphasize the ongoing nature of the action
- Can be used in: present, past (Perfekat), and future
Examples:
- Pisati pismo. — to write a letter (process)
- Čitati knjigu. — to read a book (ongoing)
Usage in sentences:
- Pišem pismo. — I am writing a letter.
- Čitao sam knjigu. — I was reading a book.
- Sutra pišem test. — I’m writing a test tomorrow.
3. Perfective Verbs
- Emphasize the completion of the action
- Cannot be used in present tense to mean “right now” (present form = future meaning)
Examples:
- Napisati pismo. — to write (and finish) a letter
- Pročitati knjigu. — to read (and finish) a book
Usage in sentences:
- Napisao sam pismo. — I wrote the letter (and finished it).
- Pročitaću knjigu. — I will read the book (and complete it).
4. Verb Pairs (Aspect Partners)
Many verbs exist in pairs: imperfective ↔ perfective
Imperfective | Perfective | English |
pisati | napisati | to write |
čitati | pročitati | to read |
raditi | uraditi | to work/do |
kupovati | kupiti | to buy |
gledati | pogledati | to watch/look at |
jesti | pojesti | to eat |
5. Choosing Aspect
- Imperfective → when focusing on the action itself, duration, repetition
- Svakog dana pišem dnevnik. — I write my diary every day.
- Perfective → when focusing on the result/completion
- Napisao sam dnevnik. — I wrote/finished the diary.
6. Aspect + Tense
- Present Tense → only imperfective verbs are used for ongoing actions
- Čitam knjigu. — I am reading a book.
- Future Tense → both aspects possible, but with different meaning
- Čitaću knjigu. — I will be reading the book (process).
- Pročitaću knjigu. — I will finish the book (completion).
- Perfekat (Past Tense) → both aspects possible, meaning depends on whether you describe process or completion
7. Mini Dialogue (Grammar Focus)
Ana: Šta radiš?
(What are you doing?)
Marko: Pišem pismo.
(I’m writing a letter.) — imperfective
Ana: Jesi li napisao pismo?
(Have you written the letter?) — perfective
Marko: Da, napisao sam ga.
(Yes, I’ve finished writing it.)
