Cyrillic is a writing system used for many languages across Eastern Europe and Northern and Central Asia — most famously for Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, and others. Created in the 9th century by disciples of the Byzantine brothers Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius (hence the name “Cyrillic”).Based on the Greek alphabet with some additional letters from the Glagolitic script to represent sounds not found in Greek. Serbian Cyrillic was standardized in 1818 by Vuk Karadžić, who followed a “write as you speak” principle. It has 30 letters, each representing exactly one sound (no silent letters!).
