Alarm ga budi, a on prvo provuče ruku ispod jastuka da ga isključi.

Teodor seda i uzima jedno parče.

Do škole imaju petnaest minuta hoda. Teodor uvek nosi slušalice i sluša laganu muziku. Ona mu maše i ulazi trčeći, a on nastavlja dalje.

Posle matematike sledi istorija. To mu je mnogo zanimljivije. Danas pričaju o srednjem veku i utvrđenjima.

Nekoliko njegovih drugova stoji ispod drveta i priča.

Teodor pravi grimasu: „Nisam.“

Profesor objašnjava reakcije, a učenici rešavaju zadatke. Profesor klimne glavom i kaže: „Dobro si uradio.“ Teodor oseti mali ponos.

U podne je vreme ručka. Školska kantina je puna, kao i uvek. Teodor uzima supu i mali sendvič.

Posle ručka imaju još dva časa — geografiju i fizičko.

U dva sata završava nastavu i kreće kući.

Teodor joj priča o hemiji i košarci, a Laura o svojoj igri sa drugaricama.

U četiri i trideset ona zove: „Deco, idemo u park!

On to radi nekoliko minuta, a onda ga majka zameni.

Majka joj pokriva noge i gasi lampu.

U pola deset Teodor odlazi u svoju sobu.

Teodor is sixteen years old and comes from a small Baltic country, Estonia. He has been living with his mother and younger sister in this city for almost three years, ever since his mother got a job as a graphic designer in an international company. The move to a new country was difficult for Teodor at first — he had to learn a new language, find friends, get used to a different school system, and adapt to new customs. But today, when he looks back, he feels he has grown a lot and that this city has become his second home.

His day begins at around seven in the morning. The alarm wakes him, and he reaches under the pillow to turn it off. He always wishes for at least thirty more minutes of sleep, but he knows he doesn’t have time. He gets up slowly, stretches, and hears his little sister Laura talking to her stuffed bear in the next room. Teodor smiles and goes to the bathroom. He washes his face with cold water, brushes his teeth, and looks at himself in the mirror. His hair is messy, but he doesn’t care — he will wear a hoodie anyway.

His mother is already in the kitchen. On the table are two cups of tea and bread with butter and jam. The smell is warm and comforting. Teodor sits and takes a slice. His mother asks, like every morning, how he feels and whether he has any tests that day. Teodor shrugs and says, “I think I have something from chemistry.” His mother smiles and gives him an apple for later.

At 7:30, Teodor and Laura put on their shoes and get ready to leave. Their mother walks them to the door and says, “Be good and take care.” Laura turns and shouts, “Mom, I’m always good!” Teodor helps her zip up her jacket, and they leave the apartment.

It takes about fifteen minutes to walk to school. The streets are full of students — some walk alone, some in groups, some rushing to catch the bus. Teodor always wears his headphones and listens to soft music. Laura’s elementary school is on the way, so he drops her off at the entrance. She waves and runs inside, and he continues walking.

His high school is large and modern, with wide hallways and many windows. Teodor greets a few classmates and opens his locker to take his books. His first class is math. It’s not his favorite, but the teacher is patient and explains well. Teodor sits in the third row and takes out his notebook as the teacher starts writing problems on the board.

After math comes history. That is much more interesting to him. Today they are talking about the Middle Ages and fortresses. Teodor likes imagining how people lived back then and how they defended their towns. The teacher shows pictures of old fortresses, and the whole class watches with interest.

After the second period he has a fifteen-minute break. He goes outside to breathe fresh air. A few of his friends are standing under a tree talking. One of them, Luka, waves at him. Luka was the first friend Teodor made when he came to this country. Luka has loud, cheerful energy and often helps Teodor when he doesn’t understand a word.

“Are you ready for the chemistry quiz?” Luka asks.

Teodor makes a face. “No.”

Luka laughs. “I forgot half, too. It’s going to be fun.”

After the break they go back to class. The chemistry lesson starts seriously, but Teodor tries to follow. The teacher explains reactions, and the students solve tasks. Teodor understands some things, others not — but he tries. At one point, the teacher calls him to write the result on the board. His hands shake a bit, but he manages. The teacher nods: “Good work.” Teodor feels a small moment of pride.

At noon it’s lunchtime. The school cafeteria is full, as always. Teodor gets soup and a small sandwich. He sits with Luka and two girls from their class — Sara and Nikolina. They talk about video games, series, and how they want to go on a trip when spring begins. Sara suggests the zoo, Luka suggests an adventure park, and Teodor thinks he’d like to visit a nearby lake.

After lunch they have two more classes — geography and PE. Geography is about rivers and mountains of Europe. Teodor imagines traveling and seeing all those places. PE is his favorite — they play basketball, and he is pretty good at it. He is tall and moves fast. His team wins, and he leaves the gym red-faced but happy.

At two o’clock school ends. He stops by a small shop to buy bread and bananas because his mother texted him: “Please buy something for snack.” At home Laura is already there. She shows him a maze she drew. “Guess where the exit is?”

Teodor says, “Let me see. Hmm… here!”

Laura laughs: “No! You cheated!”

At 2:30 their mother comes home from work. She puts her bag on the table and asks how school was. Teodor talks about chemistry and basketball; Laura talks about games with her friends. Their mother gives them yogurt, and they sit at the table.

From 3:00 to 4:00 it’s homework time. Teodor opens his books and completes tasks from chemistry and math. Laura does her Serbian homework but keeps asking him for help: “How do I write this? What does this mean?” Teodor explains patiently. Sometimes he pretends to be a teacher: “Children, today we learn letters!” Laura laughs so loud she falls on the floor.

After homework, they have some rest time. Teodor watches a short video on his phone; Laura builds a block house. Their mother cooks soup for dinner. At 4:30 she says: “Kids, let’s go to the park! The weather is nice.”

The park is close. There’s a big slide, benches, and lots of trees. Laura runs to the swings and asks Teodor to push her. After a while, their mother takes his place, and Teodor sits on a bench listening to music. His mind is full of thoughts — school, friends, the future. Growing up sometimes scares him, but also excites him. He feels life is slowly opening new paths.

At five they return home. Their mother makes pasta with vegetables. Teodor sets the table; Laura draws a heart and says, “This is for you.” Teodor hugs her: “You’re the best.”

At six they have dinner. They talk about what Teodor learned, what happened at work, what Laura wants to take to school tomorrow. After dinner they wash dishes together — Teodor rinses, their mother dries, Laura hands them the utensils. Sometimes they turn it into a game: whoever finishes first gets to choose a movie for the weekend.

At 7:30 Teodor has his own time — guitar practice. He has been learning for a year. He’s not great yet, but he can play simple melodies. His mother says he’s improving. Laura sometimes sits next to him and taps to the rhythm.

At eight their mother says: “Kids, shower time.” Laura runs to the bathroom and makes bubbles everywhere. Teodor showers quickly and puts on sweatpants. Then he reads a little from a library book — a story about a boy traveling the world.

At nine his mother puts Laura to bed, and Teodor tidies his desk. Laura asks him to read a story for her. He sits beside her bed and reads half a chapter. Her eyes slowly close. Their mother covers her and turns off the lamp.

At 9:30 Teodor goes to his room. He checks messages — Luka asks if he wants to go to the park tomorrow after school. Teodor writes: “Sure, if it doesn’t rain.”

He lies down thinking about the day — school, basketball, friends, Laura, the park. It was an ordinary day, but full of small moments that make him feel good. He closes his eyes, ready for the new day ahead.

Teodor

Luka
