An Ordinary Day That Wasn’t Ordinary

In a small town near a river lived a girl named Sara. She was fifteen years old and went to the local school. Her days were simple and almost always the same: waking up at seven, breakfast at home, going to school, and returning home around two in the afternoon. But on one Thursday, a completely ordinary day became different from any day she had before.

That morning, Sara woke up a little sleepy. The alarm rang three times, and each time she said, “Just two more minutes…” When she finally got up, she saw it was already seven fifteen. She quickly put on jeans, a T-shirt, and tied her hair into a ponytail. The smell of pancakes was coming from the kitchen. Her mom always made pancakes on Thursdays. Sara sat down, ate two with jam, and drank a cup of milk. Her mom told her to take an umbrella because the weather forecast said it would rain.

Sara shook her head: “I don’t need it, it’s sunny.” She left the house with her backpack and earphones. The song she was listening to was cheerful, and she walked slowly toward school. Along the way she met her neighbor Marko who was walking his dog. The dog’s name was Leo, and he always got excited when he saw Sara. He jumped around her and wagged his tail. Sara petted him and continued walking.

When she arrived at school, she immediately noticed that something was different. On the board in the hallway there was an announcement: “Teacher Jelena is absent today. Instead of math class there will be group work in the library.” Sara liked the library because it was always quiet and calm. She sat at a table with her friends Milica and Tamara and started working on an assignment about recycling. The class passed quickly, and the three of them agreed to go to the bakery for burek after school.

But then it started to rain. Not a small rain, but a strong, heavy rain with wind. Sara looked through the window and remembered her mom’s words about the umbrella. “I should have taken it…” she said to herself. The rain didn’t stop even when the school day ended.

Still, Sara and her friends decided to go to the bakery because they were already hungry. They ran from the school entrance to a big tree, then from the tree to a kiosk, then from the kiosk to the bakery. They were all wet up to their knees, but they laughed because it was fun. In the bakery, the warm smell of fresh burek welcomed them. The saleswoman said, “You are my first customers today brave enough to go out in this weather!” The girls took burek with cheese and sat by the window, watching the water flow down the street.

On the way home the rain was lighter. Sara noticed something she usually didn’t: people were smiling more than usual. One man was holding a huge blue umbrella, almost like a small tent. Two women were trying to cross the street and jumping over big puddles. Children wearing rubber boots were stepping into puddles on purpose, making big splashes. Sara felt that the town was livelier than usual, just because of the rain.

When she got home, she immediately took off her wet socks and sat by the radiator. Her mom brought her hot chocolate and said, “See? I told you about the umbrella.” But she wasn’t angry, she only smiled. Sara told her everything: about the bakery, about running in the rain, about the puddles and the laughter. Her mom laughed too and said, “Sometimes those days become the best ones.”

After lunch, Sara did her homework, then sat by the window watching the rain slowly stop. The sun appeared behind the clouds and a rainbow formed. It was big and bright. Sara called her brother: “Come look! A rainbow!” The two of them stood for a few minutes watching the colors in the sky. Sara felt a peaceful warmth in her chest, as if the whole day had been a small unexpected adventure.

Later, when night came and the wind calmed down, Sara lay in bed thinking about the day. She woke up sleepy, forgot her umbrella, got wet, ran through the streets, ate warm burek, laughed with her friends, saw a rainbow… All of those were ordinary things, but together they made a special day.

Before falling asleep, Sara thought: “Maybe tomorrow will be an ordinary day again, but you never know. There might be another small surprise waiting.” With that thought she closed her eyes and fell asleep peacefully, while outside only the soft dripping of rain from the roofs remained.
